Stengl Lost Pines Biological Research Station offers many facilities and resources for researchers and educators. The field station’s greatest asset is its diverse range of habitats, which include the rare “Lost Pines” forest community. The stand of pines on the SLP property is largest, countinuous, old growth pine forest in the Lost Pines region following the 2012 and 2015 wildfires. This community is vulnerable to climate change and shifts in the region’s fire regime, making it an important focus of the field station’s preservation efforts. Other habitats at SLP include the open grasslands in the North tract the wetlands following JD creek, and oak-pine woodlands that occur in patches across the property. We are developing long-term records and maps of the habitats at SLP to provide opportunities for the exploration of community dynamics and succession following different disturbance histories.
The SLP campus also offers a variety of indoor and outdoor research facilities, including accommodations, meeting rooms, lab spaces, a greenhouse and a workshop. Outdoor plots and exclosures are also offered to researchers for a monthly fee. For more information on the spaces we provide and the required fees, please see our Fee Schedule.
